Should “the church” engage in political advocacy? Why and how? Should the church engage in political lobbying on issues which may be viewed as spiritually or morally grounded? If so, how and to what extent?
My denomination has a board headquartered in DC and it is located about 100 feet from the Supreme Court building and across the street from the Capitol building. They engage in political lobbying for legislation for a host of issues, including immigration, prison reform, torture prevention, environment, health issues, and the like. Is this crossing the line or prophetic speaking to power for positive and even redemptive change?
If you are helping those in need, have you ever asked the question, “WHY are they in need?” That relates to advocacy to try and fix the problem that is behind the need.
Is that a good use of the church’s time and money and efforts?
I’m still in discussion with myself and haven’t made up my mind. Your thoughts?
